Rishikesh is not hard to reach, but it is not a single hop from most places either. The usual shape of the journey is an international flight into Delhi, then one of three ways north: a short domestic flight to Dehradun, a train to Haridwar, or a road journey straight through. Which one suits you depends mostly on when you land in Delhi and how much of the day you are willing to spend travelling.

Book your international flight into Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi. From there you can take a taxi or a rented car north, or you can book a second, domestic flight to the nearest airport to Rishikesh, which is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED).
Flying on to Dehradun is the route we recommend, and it is the one the free transfer covers. The hop from Delhi is short, it removes the longest and least comfortable stretch of the road journey, and it puts you close enough that the last leg is a straightforward drive. Pickup from Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED) is included with every residential course, and so is the transfer back at the end of your training. Send us your flight number and landing time once your ticket is booked and we will have someone waiting for you. If your flight is delayed or rescheduled, message us as soon as you know — we would far rather rearrange the car than have you land and find nobody there.
A quiet branch line connects Rishikesh to Haridwar, but only about three slow trains run on it each day. For most arrivals it is better to take the train as far as Haridwar Junction and to continue from there by road. There are many trains from Delhi to Haridwar; among the better options are the Shatabdi Express, the Jan Shatabdi, the AC Special Express and the Mussoorie Express.
From Haridwar you have three ways to cover the last stretch to Rishikesh. A bus takes about forty-five minutes and costs in the region of 30 INR. A taxi takes about thirty minutes and costs in the region of 800 INR. An auto-rickshaw sits between the two at roughly forty minutes and around 500 INR. Fares move over time and with bargaining, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quoted price.
Rail comes into its own in peak season and during a mela, the religious fairs that periodically fill this stretch of the Ganga. At those times bus routes are diverted around Haridwar and the roads slow to a crawl, while the trains often run close to empty. A passenger train service can cost as little as 4 INR.
Rishikesh is about 230 kilometres from Delhi and is well connected by bus. The journey takes roughly five to seven hours depending on traffic, and an ordinary bus costs somewhere in the range of 130 to 350 INR. An air-conditioned bus costs more, generally in the range of 250 to 700 INR. Again, these are indicative rather than fixed.
For your return journey, or for onward travel after the course, there are several travel agencies around Swarg Ashram and Laxman Jhula that book luxury buses to the destinations students most often head for next, including Delhi, Jaipur, Pushkar and Varanasi. You do not need to arrange any of this before you arrive.
From Rishikesh railway station you can take a shared rickshaw towards Laxman Jhula. These are the small shared vehicles known locally as Vikrams, after the brand name, and the fare is around 15 INR. If you are heading for Swarg Ashram on the far bank, you will cross Ram Jhula to get there.
